Before anything else: the Soniox key
Voice does not include speech recognition. Transcription is done by Soniox, a cloud service, billed by Soniox to your own Soniox account. You create an account at console.soniox.com and paste the API key into Voice when you set it up. Voice never charges for transcription and takes no part of it.
If dictation does nothing, this is the first thing to check: the menu bar item says what is missing in plain words.
Common questions
The fn key does nothing
Voice needs Accessibility permission to notice the key you are holding and to insert text at your cursor. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility and turn on the switch next to Voice. If Voice is not in that list, add it with the + button and pick it from your Applications folder — a sandboxed app cannot put itself there.
Also check that macOS is not keeping the key for itself: System Settings › Keyboard › "Press 🌐 to" should be set to Do Nothing for fn to reach Voice.
It cannot hear me
System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone, and turn on Voice. Voice listens only while you hold the key.
Screenshots or recordings are blank
The capture tools need Screen Recording permission: System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording, and turn on Voice. macOS only applies it to a freshly opened app, so quit and reopen Voice afterwards — the permission card in Voice has a Reopen button for exactly this.
What does it cost to run?
Voice itself is paid once, on the App Store, with no in-app purchases. Soniox charges for the audio it transcribes; the app shows what you have spent this month in Settings › Engine, read from your own Soniox account. Ordinary use runs to cents per hour of speech, but the number that matters is the one in your Soniox console. AI cleanup is optional and billed by the provider you connect, to your own account.
AI cleanup says "pasted as dictated"
AI cleanup waits at most three seconds for the text service. If it is slow or unreachable, Voice pastes exactly what Soniox heard rather than keep you waiting. Check the key in Settings › Engine › Text cleanup.
Where are my history and captures?
On your Mac, and nowhere else: history in the app's own container, saved captures in the folder you chose. Nothing is uploaded to the developer, who runs no servers.
